Kendrick E. Curry, Senior Pastor

As a born-again, called and committed servant-leader, the Reverend Dr. Kendrick E. Curry strives for the continual advancement of the cause of Jesus Christ within the church and community. For the past three years, he has served as Pastor of The Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, and led the congregation to new heights with a Kingdom-focused agenda through substantive and quality preaching, experiential worship, church visioning, educational programming, and community leadership and other development activities.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Dr. Curry is the son Deacon James E. and Sister Willie B. Curry. He received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering (cum laude) from Prairie View A&M University. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and the Master of Divinity (magna cum laude) from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, where he was class valedictorian.

After completing his degrees in 1984-1995, Dr. Curry joined the Union Carbide Corporation (now the Dow Chemical Corporation) as a Research Scientist in Charleston, West Virginia. He was licensed to preach the Gospel in 1997 at the First Baptist Church of Charleston and served as an Associate Pastor under the leadership of Rev. Gary A. Williams. The following year, he was called to pastor the Bethlehem Baptist Church. He was ordained in January 1999 and installed as the pastor in February 1999.

In 2001, while maintaining his pastorate in West Virginia, Dr. Curry became Principal Investigator of the prestigious NASA/Harriett G. Jenkins Predoctoral Fellowship Program administered by the UNCF Special Programs Corporation in Fairfax, Virginia. In 2003 he relocated to Washington, DC to accept the call as the Senior Pastor of The Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church. Dr. Curry actively participates in the faith community. He is a member of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, American Baptist Convention and Southern Baptist Convention. Locally, he serves on the Executive Board of the Baptist Convention of DC and Vicinity and The District of Columbia Baptist Convention (DCBC), where he is a member of the Council for Ordination. For the Missionary Baptist Ministers’ Conference of DC and Vicinity, he serves on the Civic and Social Action Committee. Dr. Curry is an adjunct professor at the Maple Springs Baptist Bible College and Seminary, where he teaches courses in Evangelism and Christian Living.

Dr. Curry is a strong advocate for education and academic excellence. Accordingly, he serves as the Ambassador for the Washington DC Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (WDC STEM) Partnership.

Dr. Curry and his wife, the Rev. Karen Whitney Curry, are the parents of Keyona and Kendrick II.
